Connecting families in Bullsbrook

Meerilinga Bullsbrook Family Service have been busy in March connecting families with vital information and community organisations.

Rachel Murray from RLSWA presented a power point session on water safety which consisted of statistics and facts about drowning as well as key factors in how to prevent drowning, such as

  • Prevent: your child’s access to water at all times
  • Learn: Teach your child to be water confident
  • Respond: Learn CPR and Call 000
  • Supervise: Always keep watch of your children in arms reach when around water

Rachel also demonstrated basic CPR for children. Families filled out a survey with positive responses and engaged in discussions on the safety issues they face living on rural properties. All families that participated were given a water safety pack filled with information.

Meerilinga placed a stall at Bullsbrook College Open Night next to the P&C to introduce Meerilinga Bullsbrook’s new parenting service available to families in the school community. Parents were handed flyers and were informed that service is located in the Early Education Area 1pm – 4pm every Thursday where families can meet with staff, gather parenting information, guidance and be connected with relevant agencies if needed.

Staff also took the opportunity to promote Meerilinga’s Family Circle group which is held every Monday at Lowery Park 10am -12pm and informed of upcoming workshops and events including a children’s free 8 week music and movement program “Move and Groove” scheduled for term two. Community response was positive with a particular interest in the upcoming children’s music sessions.

Guest speaker Sue Marsh led a discussion on Parenting WA services and workshops that families can access. Parents were responsive to the discussion, with particular interest in the 123 Magic Behaviour Management Program. Parents went on to share their own experiences and raised questions on how to best manage their children’s behaviour. Sue briefly explained child brain development and their ability to comprehend versus parent expectations and gave some ideas on how to match parenting strategies to suit the child’s personality. Parenting WA is aiming to bring their services to Bullsbrook and all expressed their interest in attending workshops.
