Employment references

Meerilinga recognises exchange of information between employers maximises the opportunity for employees to fit the positions for which they are best suited. Where possible, Meerilinga wishes to provide and receive accurate information on the individuals with whom it deals however applies precautions necessary to safeguard the organisation against litigation.

‘References’ refers to all material or information obtained or provided, in confidence or otherwise, to prospective employers or Meerilinga to be used to assess a candidate’s suitability for a position. The purpose of references is to obtain information from a third party, providing a factual check on a candidate’s employment history, qualifications, experience and/or an assessment of the candidate’s suitability for the position in question.

The CEO is the only authorised representative to provide references for employees and ex-employees where this is their wish. However, there is no obligation on the organisation to do so. Written references will not be provided and verbal references will be provided for a period of up to 1 (1) year from cessation of employment. The CEO may refer to a direct supervisor to support the reference detail. A statement of employment can be provided for a period of up to five (5) years from cessation of employment.

Prior to providing a reference the prospective employer must ensure that the consent of the applicant has been obtained. A prior employee can download the Reference Release Form and return the form by email to
