STEM for Girls at Meerilinga Cockburn

Looking to get your girls interested in STEM? Then look no further!

After a successful school holiday program Meerilinga Cockburn will now host a seven week STEM for Girls program. The course will run in conjunction with Engineering for Kids Australia and the Yangebup Family Centre, and will commence the week of 13 May.

The courses are designed for three age groups: 4 – 6 years, 7 – 9 years and 10 – 14 years. Ultimately, the aim is to encourage girls to discover an interest and gain confidence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

STEM is such a huge part of the world around us, and so many careers are now STEM based. Therefore, with research showing that by the age of 5 girls already believe that boys are better at Maths*, this is the perfect opportunity to help your girls discover a passion for STEM.

Junior Engineer

The 4 – 6 year old age group will take part in an Aerospace Engineering program. Students will use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and refine a variety of flying machines. Each week they will work on a new craft, and will learn different principles of engineering.

Apprentice Engineer

The 7 – 9 year old group will work on software engineering and scratch video sensing. Video sensing allows students to design and program their own video games. After which, students test their work by interacting with the program via webcam. In this Scratch program, students work together to create their own games, art, and musical instruments while exploring coding foundations.

Master Engineer

The 10 – 14 year old group program will cover Hardware Engineering and wiring with a Makey Makey. Imagine designing a piano using celery or a creating a custom digital training program. Now, imagine playing video games using just your body, a bit of wire and your own imagination. Students will engineer their own customized video game controllers using a Makey Makey device and materials that can be found in just about any kitchen. Through application of circuitry, acoustical engineering and video game design, students will discover new ways to interact with technology. All of this, while creating unique designs in a fun collaborative environment!
