Dads in the Early Years

Recognising the vital role fathers and father figures play in the development of children, Dads in the Early Years aims to increase support and recognition for fathers/father figures and strengthen children’s relationships with their fathers.

The Dads in the Early Years program works with practitioners and service providers to assist them to

  • Recognise the value of fathers to children
  • Appreciate the importance of fathers to the care and education planning and service provision process
  • Understand the issues unique to working with fathers
  • Effectively involve fathers in all aspects of children’s development and care
  • Work with fathers in a wide range of family situations and structures

Working with Dads Workshops are designed for practitioners and service providers to assist them in engaging better with fathers/father figures.

Dads in the Early Years passionately supports dads in the development of Playdads Playgroups to work directly with fathers/father figures and their children, providing a safe and friendly environment for men to share parenting and other issues and enjoy time with their children.

To provide families with tips along their parenting journey we have added a webpage full of Parenting Tip Sheets about some of the frequently encountered issues parents regularly face.

We know through research that not all dads are aware of the support that is available for them in the community, so we maintain a Dads Directory of Services.

  • Provide other recent research about the increasingly recognised link between ‘positive’ fathering and child development
  • Provide plenty of opportunities for class and small group discussion
  • Contain very relevant and useful interactive activities
  • Foster interagency learning and collaboration by bringing services together who are particularly interested in engaging more dads
